Last easter, I went to Fredensborg Castle with the family. The kids weren’t happy: Too much walking and too much fresh air. But I had a Lomo Experimental Kit for Micro Four Thirds with me, so I enjoyed the trip anyways. The kit consists of three crappy lenses – but what a joy to shoot with them:0)
The youngest didn’t want to walk, so I carried him around on the shoulders. That also meant I had to take photos with a single hand, and shoot fast without thinking (too much). I had anticipated his fear of walking, and that was also the reason I had the Lomo lenses with me: So I could shoot lomo style acoording to the ten golden Lomography rules*:
- Take your camera everywhere you go
- Use it any time – day and night
- Lomography is not an interference in your life, but part of it
- Try the shot from the hip
- Approach the objects of your Lomographic desire as close as possible
- Don’t think (William Firebrace)
- Be fast
- You don’t have to know beforehand what you captured on film
- Afterwards either
- Don’t worry about any rules
The images the turned out to be pure digital lomo-styles shots. And it was really great just to shoot from the hip without thinking about composition, camera settings etc.
The lenses are fully manual and made of cheap plastic. This is a winning combination: The lenses aren’t particularly sharp, there’s lots of vignetting, perspective distortion and chromatic abberation. Secondly, it focuses slowly and inaccurately (manual focus, so does this say more about the photographer than the lens…?).
But the price is right: You get a fish-eye lens, a 12 mm wide angle (24mm in full frame equivalents) and a 24mm (48mm full frame) for just 30 Euro in the Lomography store. You also get a couple of color gels, which fit into the back of the lenses. A bit fiddly, but ok.
So my advice is: Go ahead and buy it. Its a real bang for the buck. Shoot and enjoy all the imperfections;-)
Have a look at the gallery below for an idea of what You can do with the Lomography Experimental kit for M43 fitted on an Olympus OM-D EM 10 Mark iii. Enjoy Fredensborg Lomo style:-)
Addition: I’ve also made a little video with the lomo kit – I’ll make a post about it soon;-)
